Dubuque Teams find great competition at the Iowa Soccer Youth Indoor Championship in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Dubuque Soccer Club sent 6 overall teams to compete in UNI dome Feb 4th and 5th with a boys and girls team in the U13,U14,and U16 age groups. The DSC teams finished overall with 9 wins for the weekend and had two teams advance on to the playoffs. The U13 girls losing in the tie-breaker to advance in the wildcard spot. The U14 girls coached by Jason Berna made the playoffs with the wildcard slot playing the State Champions from South Dakota, the DASC Premier. This U14 girls match up was a hard fought game with both sides having chances and both goalkeepers coming up with big saves. The DSC U14 girls lost 1-0 in a great game that could have went either way. The U14 boys team coaches by Viktor Bergstrand advanced in the wild card slot as well and played the Iowa City Alliance in the semi-finals. The U14 boys controlled most of the game up 3-0 until the last few minutes when the Alliance scored two goals in the closing minutes to put the game closer than it was. Mark Histed scored twice and Alex Herrera tallied a goal in the semi-finals for the U14 DSC boys. The team then had a quick turnaround playing one hour later in the finals to the only team that they lost to in pool play, the Los Amigos. The game got off to a bad start for the DSC U14 boys as they gave up a few early goals but then managing to settle in by scoring a great goal by Drake Arensdorf off a set piece. The U14 boys gave a great effort in the finals but were not able to topple the Los Amigos team the second time around. All and all the DSC teams represented the Club very well and played strong teams from Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota!!

I am writing about my experience at the Team Chicago College Showcase, in hope that it will promote more young adults to attend college showcases in the future. The first thing we got was a sheet telling us the color and number of shirt we were. They gave you this information in advance, so you can pick which colleges you are interested in and tell them your color and number. Next we were given a schedule of the time we played and which team we were on. The team’s alternated players so you can meet new people which helps coaches see how you work with different people. Each individual played 3 games, that were 20 minutes long. When it was time for lunch we were given food and while we ate they had a question and answer session where all of the visiting college coaches came down onto the field and anyone could ask them questions. There were about 25-30 college coaches all from different divisions. College showcases are a great opportunity to showcase your talents, meet new people, and get to know more about which colleges you would like to attend. If I had anything to say to any students that are thinking about going to a college showcase it would be, don’t be afraid to go by yourself, it’s a great opportunity you don’t get often.

-Devan Stieber
