Congratulations to the Boys U13 Firestorm for making the National State Cup Final
U13 Boys National State Cup Finalists

The U13 Boys Firestorm went 1-0-2 in bracket play. Tying Ames 1-1, beating the Iowa Rush 4-0 and tying Heartland 1-1 to make it to the National State Cup Semifinal where they succeeded in beating the #1 seed JUSC 2-0. Unfortunatly our brave boys could not get past a strong Heartland team. After being tied 2-2 through 70 minutes of intense soccer, the boys lost in the second half of overtime 3-2, when a long distance shot from outside the box found its way into the lower left corner of the goal with only 3 minutes remaining. Great job boys on being the first DSC team to make the Iowa National State Cup finals and show the rest of Iowa what a Dubuque team can do if they work hard, prepare well, have the passion to challenge themselves to play at a high level.

HOW TO WIN A TOURNAMENT IN SIX EASY STEPS

If there was a theme from our weekend, it may be summed up in a quote from one of the players “We play at the level of the other teams.” The good thing is we learned a lot about ourselves and the level we can play at in this five team round robin tournament. I think the kids will say it was worth the trouble. 40 minutes halves with running time and no half time; subs on the fly at any time, fast paced and fun.

STEP 1 - LOSE A GAME YOU SHOULD HAVE WON

Our first game was against West Des Moines and we were pretty shaky from the start.  It was 0-2 after 7 minutes.  We tied it at 2-2 after 23 minutes but eventually lost the game 5-4. A game we let slip away but really learned from.

STEP 2 - WIN A GAME YOU DON’T DESERVE TO WIN

Our second game was against Norwalk, who on Friday night had lost to VSA 6-0.  Now this was a game that was summed up by Coach Marc with these words, “You played five minutes of brilliant soccer and scored three goals. The other 35 was absolute rubbish.”  Once again we spotted our opponent two goals. Then in successive minutes (28, 29, 30) everything clicked. Winning 3-2 and gaining confidence we could really play at this level and learned the fact that a team should never give up.

STEP 3 - SWALLOW THE “BITTER” PILL

So after the game, Coach Marc is giving the kids some thoughts about the game and some instructions for the rest of the evening.  They include, “I’ll let you have your feet and legs in the jacuzzi for 15 minutes, no more. Then get some rest so that you are ready for the morning.”  That might have been it until Holly Bitter asked, “What about the regular pool?”  Coach Marc would have none of that.  He gave the kids some good information about the investment that parents make in these events and that they did not pay that money and spend this time to watch their kids be worn out on Sunday because they were in the pool all night Saturday.  There was muted but visible reaction, but the kids went back to the hotel and held each other accountable and nobody swam.  Was this the difference in STEP SIX?  Perhaps!

STEP 4 - TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN BUSINESS

Our morning started with some free time on field as we had the first game of the day at 8:00 am.  We played a little “hit the crossbar” and had our warm up on the field.  Then we played the Heartland Warriors. We played better, starting fast and scored the first three goals in 15 minutes, ending up with 6-2 victory and we won a game we should have won!

STEP 5 - GET BY WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR FRIENDS

While we were playing Heartland, West Des Moines was playing Norwalk on the field next to us. Norwalk scored a couple of late goals to tie the game which was necessary for us to have a chance in the final game. Without that tie, we would have had to beat VSA in the last game of the 5 team round robin tournament by 13 goals!

STEP 6 - SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST

Because of the tie breaking rules, it was a de facto championship game. If we won, we were champs.  If they tied or won, they were champs. Joey Ott stated after the game “THAT was a fun game!” I can also quote Coach Marc again who said to the kids, “That was the best defensive game I have ever seen from an U11 team.” The game was played at a much higher pace and skill level than any of the other games had been and the kids were up to the task. Very entertaining to watch, especially in light of the outcome. But in any case, the kids played great. Matt Wessels was very strong in goal and we gave them very little room to move the ball as they had been accustomed to doing in the other games they played. When Jacob "Guppy" Berning found Reese "Dilly" Adams with a pass behind the defenders, all that needed to be done was push it home and he did. 1-0 was the final score but thousands of lessons learned. For sure, we needed every ounce of energy that the kids had saved by not swimming the night before!

Champions! But more than that, we learned and improved through the weekend. And as always, we conducted ourselves as gentlemen which is perhaps most important of all.
